Hidden Things to Do in Ubud

Ubud has its famous stops: the Monkey Forest, the Tegallalang rice terraces, the Ubud Palace. They are popular for good reason, but they can also be crowded. If you want the Ubud that locals know, with quiet temples, village lanes and real craft traditions, these places are all easy to reach and rarely feel busy.

If you are planning your Bali holiday, here are Six of the best things to do in Canggu to help you make the most of your visit.

1. Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu: the calmer water temple

Most visitors head to Tirta Empul for the holy spring. Gunung Kawi Sebatu, in the village of Sebatu north of Ubud, has pools, carved fountains and lotus ponds in a peaceful garden setting, with far fewer tour groups. Go in the morning and dress modestly, with a sarong and sash (usually available at the entrance).

2. Petulu Village: white herons at dusk

Just north of Ubud, Petulu is known for the thousands of white herons that fly in to roost in the trees at sunset. It is free, quick and surprisingly magical. Arrive around late afternoon and watch the sky fill up. It pairs well with a stop at nearby rice fields.

3. Penestanan and the Sari Organik rice field walk

Skip the busy terraces and follow the small paths through Penestanan village, past artists’ studios and open rice fields. The walk toward Sari Organik is gentle, quiet and good for photos, and you can finish with a meal overlooking the paddies.

4. Pejeng: Bali's ancient heritage

The Pejeng area, a short drive east of Ubud, holds some of Bali’s oldest historic sites, including the Pura Penataran Sasih temple and Pura Pusering Jagat. Few tourists come here, so you can explore at your own pace and learn about early Balinese history.

5. Batuan village: traditional painting

Batuan is a centre of classical Balinese painting, with detailed scenes of village life and mythology. Visit a local gallery, meet the artists and see how the work is made. It is a more authentic alternative to the busier art markets.

6. Mas village: woodcarving workshops

Mas is a village of master woodcarvers. Many workshops welcome visitors to watch the carving process. You can buy directly from the artists, and often have a conversation about the craft.
